Dear HelpLine – Support for Young Adults

Dear HelpLine,

My mom was diagnosed with FTD and Iā€™m looking to connect with other young adults caring for a parent with FTD. Without support, I am overwhelmed and feel alone. Do you have any suggestions?

Because FTD often occurs at a younger age, young adults in the family regularly find themselves becoming a primary caregiver on top of their other responsibilities, such as attending college, working, managing their household, and in some cases, raising children. Further complicating matters are the unique, unexpected challenges that inevitably arise throughout the FTD journey: changing plans, shifting relationships, and difficult decisions you may not feel qualified to make at your age.

AFTD wants you to know you are not alone as you embrace your new role. One of the best ways to gain support and connection is to connect with others who share and understand this experience. Here are some ways you can connect with others:

  • AFTD has support groups specifically for young-adult caregivers on our state pages.
  • AFTD moderates a young adult Facebook group for people in their 20s and 30s who have a family member or loved one with FTD. This group offers a supportive environment where people can feel comfortable sharing their feelings and experiences. As a ā€œsecretā€ group, it cannot be found by searching on Facebook. To learn how to join, email youngadults@theaftd.org.Ā
  • On June 15, AFTD volunteers will host a virtual Meet & Greet for college-aged adults who live with and help care for a person with FTD. Learn more here by visiting our website.

Additional Resources:

  • Lorenzoā€™s House, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting youth with a parent with young-onset dementia, is hosting a virtual Youth Summit on June 14 and 15. More information can be found on their website.Ā
  • The Family Caregiver Alliance maintains a resource on their website that lists Considerations for Young Adult Caregivers.
