August’s volunteer of the month is Dan Moser of Florida. For Dan, becoming a local resource to caregivers as a support group volunteer has been both a meaningful and educational experience. When his wife, Maria, was diagnosed with semantic variant PPA nearly 10 years after receiving a dementia diagnosis, Dan searched for resources to help them on their FTD journey. Through his search, he discovered AFTD.

As he learned more about the disease, Dan decided to take what he learned and offer it to others facing similar challenges. Dan shares, “Once I learned there was no local in-person support group, I decided to become educated enough about FTD to feel prepared to take the caregiver support group facilitator training, and start up a group with fellow caregivers from Southwest Florida.”

Through his own experience caring for his wife, Dan understands the importance of building a strong care and support team and strives to help others do the same while on their journey.

“From the beginning of our almost 15-year-long FTD journey, I have been fully committed to seeing that Maria has the best life possible. Having a team of professionals, along with friends and family for support, has been invaluable. Maria’s happiness makes me happy as well,” Dan says. “I find my involvement as a group facilitator, and now a local resource, to be an ongoing education and very fulfilling.”

Dan has now served as a support group volunteer for five years, and continues to share information, resources, and hope with his group members. AFTD is grateful to Dan for his service and dedication to providing support to others on their FTD journey.
