The volunteer of the month for April is Doris Booth. Long-time AFTD volunteer Doris raised her hand to help others back at the start of her own journey, when she realized a need for support in her local community. Doris formed the Dallas FTD Caregiver Support Group in May 2011 after one of her closest family members was diagnosed with FTD. A few years later, her brother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, likely layered with PPA.

“Both diagnoses were devastating and life-changing. I had to work hard to understand and accept these progressive brain diseases,” Doris said. “Sharing my personal challenges with others who are on a similar journey has brought me comfort and peace.”

Doris continues to serve her group members nearly ten years later, helping to ensure that each person feels heard and supported, and is educated about FTD and equipped with all of the resources that are available to them. “I am committed to my association with AFTD, and to our monthly meetings, where we share ideas, resources, and lots of hugs.”

She also continues to provide care for her loved ones, and says that “the most important thing we can do for our loved ones is to be there with them and share every precious moment, whether difficult or happy.”

AFTD is grateful to Doris for her continued service and dedication to providing support to others on the FTD journey. If you’re interested in becoming a part of our national volunteer network,  visit our website to learn more, and fill out our volunteer form to get started.
