September’s Volunteer of the Month: Marian Grems

September’s volunteer of the month is Marian Grems. When Marian’s husband, Rob, was diagnosed with bvFTD in 2000, support was nonexistent. While she was overwhelmed by his diagnosis and feeling helpless and alone, her outlook brightened when she received a phone call from another FTD caregiver. “I am forever grateful for her kindness,” Marian says. While she never expected an FTD “do-over,” Marian became a second-time FTD caregiver in 2013, this time for her son Jeff. By this time, AFTD was an established organization, offering support, advocacy, resources, and hope.

Now as an AFTD volunteer, Marian supports others on their FTD journey as a facilitator for her local support group in Ohio. She also spreads critical awareness through table settings and has hosted a local Meet & Greet; and this year she’s participating in AFTD’s annual Food for Thought campaign.

When asked why she volunteers with AFTD, Marian had this to say: “There is a moment of grace that accompanies the sigh of relief from a caregiver when they first connect and realize that they aren’t alone. I am honored by the trust others put in me when sharing their fears, challenges, and small victories. Volunteering for AFTD has given me the opportunity to pay it forward.”

AFTD is immeasurably grateful to Marian for her volunteer service, and the vital support she provides to those in our community.
